Recommended Websites Types of Car Speedometer Many of us are probably not familiar with a car speedometer and where it can be found. If you have been inside the dashboard of a car, there you can see a speedometer. Speedometer is universally fitted to motor vehicles. This device started to be available as options in the 1900s, and as standard equipment from about 1910 onwards. Cars, motorcycles and bicycles use speedometers to measure their rate of speed. There are three types of car speedometer that you can buy today, namely mechanical analog, quartz electric analog or dial types, and digital microprocessor. Speedometers for other vehicles have specific names and use other means of sensing speed. For a boat, this is called a pit log. For an aircraft, this is an airspeed indicator. The speedometer in a car can usually be seen in the dashboard together with variety of sensors and gauges, including the oil pressure gauge, fuel level gauge, tachometer and others. Car speedometer indicates the speed of your vehicle in miles per hour, kilometers per hour or both. The analog type of car speedometer uses a needle to point to a specific speed which the driver reads as a number printed on a dial. The mechanical analog speedometer functions on the magnetic principle. Floating on bearings between the upper frame and the revolving permanent magnet is a non-magnetic movable speed cup. The quartz type is integrated electronic circuitry to process an electrical speed signal. This signal is generated by a permanent-magnet generator mounted in the transmission. In digital microprocessor speedometer which can be found in modern cars, the vehicle speed is monitored by the permanent speed sensor attached in the transmission. Automotive
