Recommended Websites Fuel Cells For Cars The advancement in automotive technology has paved the way to alternative options to solve the soaring prices of gasoline. One of them is the use of fuel cells for cars. This technology has been around since the 19th century. A fuel cell was first created in 1839 by Sir William Grove and refined in 1932 by Francis Bacon. The most popular application of fuel cells was aboard NASA space shuttles to provide electricity to various systems. Fuel cells, like batteries, provide electricity in a similar manner. The United States has dedicated more than one billion dollars to fuel cell research and development so far. But how does a fuel cell work to run a car? Fuel cells make use of electrochemical or energy conversion device that converts hydrogen and oxygen into water to produce electricity. Like a battery, a fuel cell produces direct current power voltage that can be used to power motors, lights or any number of electrical appliances. However, a fuel cell can continue to provide energy for as long as there is a fuel. Hence, unlike a normal battery with a finite storage of energy before it needs to be recharged, a fuel cell works together with a fuel. There are different types of fuel cells that can be used to generate energy. Fuel cells are usually classified by their operating temperature and the type of electrolyte they use. The properties of each fuel cell provide the basis for deciding their most suitable application. Fuel cells classification includes Polymer exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM), Molten-carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and Alkaline fuel cell (AFC). Automotive Sites: |
