BARKING 101

Before you start training your dog with a bark collar system, it is important to understand the reason why dogs bark in the first place. Dogs bark to communicate and express themselves. The last thing you want to do is hinder a dog for communicating when it needs to. Sometimes we need our dogs to warn us of danger, or when they need to go outside. But there are times when excessive barking can be the cause of behavioral problems. This guide is for you to better differentiate the difference between normal barking and excessive barking.

Types of barking

    Warning:

  • It is perfectly natural for a dog to bark when someone is at the door, or when someone is walking across the yard. This is because dogs are protective animals whom at times feel threaten when someone is coming into their territory. The warning bark is sharp, loud and authoritative. If trained properly, this type of bark can protect you and your home.
  • Anxiety:

  • This type of barking is usually high pitched and at times with whining. This is common with dogs that have separation anxiety. Anxiety barking could be the cause of behavioral problems and should be fixed.
  • Excitement

  • This type of barking is common amongst puppies and young dogs. Out of pure joy and excitement a dog will tend to show his emotion through an upbeat and melodic bark. This type of bark is acceptable only if it is controlled and not in excess.
  • Attention:

  • Dogs bark to get attention from humans and other dogs. This type of bark varies between breeds. And just like excitement barking, it is acceptable only if it is controlled.
  • Boredom:

  • Dogs will bark out of pure boredom to release energy. This type of bark tends to be more on the annoying side. If you show a bored dog a little bit of attention by playing or taking it on a walk then this type of barking should decrease.
